Super Hokkien Mee, Penang @ Jalan Bawasah

Finally, it's time to post my favourite Penang Hokkien Mee. For people outside Penang, especially KL and Singapore, this is called Prawn Noodle. This is different from the fried hokkien mee, like those I had taken in Boston Baru & Petaling Street in KL. Ours is with soup.

I always find this is the best hokkien mee in Penang. After trying this, I seldom try others. Even though each time I have to wait for at least 30 minutes, I would just drive down to town to wait for my favourite. Sometimes even took me 45 minutes, but you know when we want to eat something what we are craving, we would wait even one hour :)

This stall originally was at the back of the "SUPER Department Store". If you are from Penang, you should know that there was a very popular department store at the intersection of Burmah Road and Rangoon Road. And this hokkien mee stall was just at the coffee shop at the back of the department store. But, now they have shifted to Jalan Bawasah. Just at the back of the Burmah Road Giant Supermarket.

Someone told me that the hokkien mee at Macalister Road is the same as this one. But after tasting, I know it's totally different. You could ask for extra mantis prawns to your hokkien mee at Macalister Road but not this one.

Every time when you want to order, the owner will tell you that it would be very long. I think this is the tactic to get rid of being scolded by the long-waiting customers. But, yes, they are really very arrogant. If you want, you have to wait. If not, bye-bye. So, if you are desperately craving for this hokkien mee, then you have to be very patient. The good part is you could order Char Koay Teow while waiting. The Char Koay Teow is very nice too.

While waiting, you would see they actually prepare a lot of take away. Sometimes, one customer would order 10-15 packets back to office for breakfast. So, if you want to try, make sure you would reach there before 9.30 a.m. They start business at 7.30a.m. I remember once I went there at 9.45 a.m, and it's all sold out. My friend told me his Japanese customers once reach Penang, would ask for this hokkien mee. A lot of KL people will also come to taste it.

Look at my hokkien mee. The look tells you that it's delicious. I would just start by drinking some of the soup. Hmmmm, very nice!!! The most savoury is the soup. The taste of the soup makes the whole bowl of Hokkien Mee so yummy. I believe that they use a lot of prawns and back bones to cook this soup, that's why the sweetness is all inside. Furthermore, they would give lots of prawns (although they are cut into small slices). Some people will just ask for a small plate of lard. Well, it's definitely delicious to take with lard but every time I try to control myself not to ask for it. For my own good!!!

OMG... this hokkien mee is a NO NO to me. I had faced the worst experience over service in my life. Usually I will not blog bad about a place even the service is not up to standard but for this I really ban to go back for the second time. They give me the feeling of too commercialized and also giving me the feeling that one bowl sell to you doesn't make any different to his business. The taste also dropped a lot compare to last time when they were at Rangoon Road after the old owner passed away. Sorry for the negative comment over this post but I feel that I have the right to share with others over my bad experience.

My post over the bad experience:

I believe a lot of people will have the same feeling like you. Not everyone could tolerate their way, my father is one of them.
I did not know the owner passed away as when I started to eat this hokkien mee in the 80's, it's the same guy that was in my picture.

Yummm.... this looks so delicious but sadly to hear about how bad the service is.

Yeah, the service is not good. But since I love the noodle so much, I have to tolerate them. haha

I have heard about the good hokkien mee and the bad service. To have a bowl of hokkien mee, I need to go there early in the morning and prepare to wait too. So I still do not have chance to try it yet. Will try at least once, then only judge whether to ban it.

After my good friend raved about it, I went to the that stall 3 times but never got to eat 3 times. You know what the seller said? If you don't want to wait, you don't get to eat. WTF!

I got so pissed at their bad attitudes and inefficiency. Went to his brother's stall opposite to Padang Brown and got pissed as well.

They have the worst customer service, they make customer wait not because they have a lot of customers but because they are so slow in preparing the noodles!

They said have to wait for 1 to 1.5 hours. Very arrogant, we should all boycott them and see if they buck up on their efficiency rather than making all customers wait! They take their own sweet time, you can see a lot of frustrated customers at the stall.

Traditional Chinese business cannot scale! I am sure if you hire an Indonesian maid to prepare the noodles, she can prepare 10 bowls in 5 minutes. Why need to wait 1.5 hours just to eat their Hokkien mee? It doesn't make sense to me!

[ceage]

yeah, i agree. sometimes the way they treat people really gets me on my nerves! but somehow their business manage to "survive" for such a long time, quite a surprise though~

I have been eating their Hokkien Mee since the 80's when they were at Rangoon Road. He used to have his younger brother with him but don't know wat happened to that guy. Don;t see him around anymore. Anyway, back to this 'botak' guy, if you notice, he is a real busy-body. He is the one that will always tell the customers about the 'waiting time of 30 minutes or 1 hour'. In fact, whenever I go, I will place my orders with the auntie cos she is the one that takes the orders and not 'Botak'. So my advice to you guys is, go straight and place your orders with the auntie. She is more pleasant and polite. Botak will always 'kapoh' and tell you that you have to wait and so forth. If only he can concentrate and do what he is supposed to do in the first place, i.e. putting the condiments and soup on the bowl, then we won't have to wait till kingdom come for that bowl of 'Hokkien mee'!

My Taste Heaven December 8, 2010 11:15 AM

[anoymous]

thumbs up agree!! you are right! that botak seems to piss many people already. Why can't he just bother his own business~ gosh, never understand him
